Young Kidlat teams grapple with the issue of stem-cell harvesting

Boracay – Forty-eight young artists and writers under the age of 28 flew into Boracay to compete in The Creative Guild’s Young Kidlat competition.

During the briefing given by Young Kidlat chairperson Ompong Remigio, 24 teams–the most ever assembled for the Young Kidlat–wrapped their minds around the topic of stem-cell harvesting and therapy.

Their challenge: to persuade young adults to have their stem cells harvested and stored, in case of a future diagnosis of  cancer and degenerative diseases. Other than the deadline–this Wednesday, at 7am–the only other restrictions are the use of existing footage (a no-no) and the 30-second length of the submitted material. It is an unusual challenge, partly because international young-creative shootouts traditionally involve public-service organizations, like UNICEF or Amnesty International.

Remigio told adobo that her choice of stem-cell therapy was inspired by her family’s eventful medical history.

Of the 24 teams, the Kidlat jury will choose three–one to compete in the Young Lotus competition in Pattaya, Thailand and two, for the Young Lions Film and Cyber shootouts in Cannes, France.

The young creatives represent 18 different ad agencies. Six agencies fielded two teams each: Ace Saatchi & Saatchi, BBDO Guerrero/Proximity, DDB Philippines, DM9 JaymeSyfu, Leo Burnett and TBWASantiago Mangada Puno.

Two of the participants, Leo Burnett’s Cey Enriquez and JP Cuison, won in the 2006 competition and competed in the Young Lions. They entered once again, but this time, in different teams.

Last year’s winners came from DentsuIndio (Peepo David and Kulas Abrenilla) and BBDO Guerrero/Proximity Philippines (Rachel Teotico and Leah Mababangloob).
