Graphika Manila 2011: A peek behind new realms in multimedia design

PHILIPPINES, JUNE 27, 2011 – After bringing in Stefan Sagmeister and Tara McPherson, Graphika Manila is on a roll on its sixth year as it headlines six sessions of world-class work that is sometimes from a different dimension.

Graphika Manila aims to fuel creativity and inspire fresh talent, especially among the young graphic designers and students responsible for the annual international multimedia design conference’s packed houses. One of the country’s most influential and highly anticipated multimedia art events today, it will be held on July 30, from 10am to 5pm at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City.

The speakers promise to bring new worlds to Philippine audiences. Top billing goes to global visual effects company Weta Digital, represented by Digital Effects Supervisor Kevin Andrew Smith. The acclaimed New Zealand-based company recently won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects for its work on James Cameron’s film Avatar. Smith is currently working on Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. Among his film credits are The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Avatar, Matrix Revolutions, Spiderman 2, Beowulf, X2, Mars Attacks and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers.

Two US-based speakers join the lineup: Mike Friolo, the designer of the Manny Pacquiao collection for Nike and currently consultant to brands such as Armor, Puma and Adidas; and Laundry!, a design and animation studio that works on TV commercials, music videos and interactive experiences. Laundry!, whose clients include MTV, VH1, Wrigleys, Nike, Virgin, Mountain Dew, Zune Arts and Stussy. will be represented by PJ Richardson.

The work of the home-grown artists featured in this year’s Graphika Manila are international as well. Dan Matutina is an illustrator, designer and educator who heads up Ideals Creatives, a social enterprise design and communications agency. A former ad agency creative, he continues to work with creative agencies for commercial work, and illustrates for titles such as Popular Mechanics, Rogue and Conde Nast.

Nico and Katwo Puertollano of the design agency 27+20 cover a broad spectrum of design work from graphics to photography and video. Their clients include Suyen Corporation, local work for multinationals such as Colgate-Palmolive, Accenture and Nestle, as well as regional projects for clients such as Cisco Singapore and P&G Asia.

Cebu-based Seph Mayol, who creates digital scenery for interactive agencies and creative studios here and abroad, completes this year’s lineup. He has worked for clients such as Castrol, Walt Disney, Universal Music Group, Venetian Las Vegas and Paramount Pictures.
