Citroën’s new campaign creates controversy over use of John Lennon

Citroën’s new campaign for its DS-3 hatchback stars both the late John Lennon and Marilyn Monroe.

But it’s Lennon’s spot that has Beatles fans in an uproar. The TV spot shows an existing interview of Lennon asking, "Why all this nostalgia? Start something new. Live your life now."

After he makes his point, the car and tagline comes on: “Anti Retro.”

Lennon fans decried the use of the most revered of Beatles as tasteless and unnecessary.

But on Twitter, Lennon’s son Sean defended mother Yoko Ono’s decision to allow the use of his father’s image:

"Look, TV ad was not for money. It’s just hard to find new ways to keep Dad in the new world. Not many things as effective as TV.

"Having just seen the ad I realise why people are mad. But intention was not financial, was simply wanting to keep him out there in the world."
