Star light, star bright! The 2nd Ad Stars 2009 Busan International Advertising Festival last August at the Haeundae Grand Hotel in Busan, Korea has grown beyond host country, Japan and China. Noticeably, an increase in number and quality of entries from last year forecasts a bright future for Ad Stars. The Festival aims to grow into a major world-wide advertising festival.

David Guerrero, BBDO Guerrero/Proximity Philippines chairman & chief creative officer, headed an offline panel of 11 international judges. A total of 73 judges worldwide composed the online panel. From a total of 3,258 entries from 38 countries, down to 646 shortlisted, two Grand Prix winners and 13 Gold, 10 Silver and 23 Bronze Stars were awarded.
Noticeably, an increase in number and quality of entries from last year is a marked improvement as Ad Stars aims to grow into a major world-wide advertising festival. While international advertising festivals require joining fees, Busan Ad Stars has free competition entry, thanks to a city subsidy and a healthy roster of sponsors.
Ad Stars has two Grand Prix categories, namely Product and Service and Public Service. The first Grand Prix, for Product and Service, the winner was Matchbox, “Chase”, “Race”, and “Truck” by Ogilvy & Mather Hong Kong headed by Executive Creative Director Gavin Simpson, with Ong Shi Ping, art director and Andrew Cocker, copywriter. The TVCs were directed by the same trio, and edited by Diana Yuen.
The Grand Prix for Public Service went to New Zealand’s Colenso BBDO’s “Car” for client alzheimers.org.nz. The TVC credits include: Nick Worthington, executive creative director; Lisa Feyszyn and Jonathan McMahon, both for art direction and copy, and Dave Klaiber of Plaza Films, director.
The event also featured the Young Stars Creative Competition of 85 young students from various educational universities throughout Korea, China and Japan.
