Film: SSFF & ASIA’s award-winning shorts are streamed at Online Grand Theater until June 30

TOKYO, JAPAN — Now in its 23rd year, the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA), one of the biggest international short film festivals in Asia, was held in a hybrid of online and real venues while taking measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

With this year’s theme, CINEMADventure, new trends were introduced in visual productions with smartphones and vertical video and challenged new developments unique to the film festival, such as screening films from online venues to Japan and the world, online LIVE talk events, screenings in virtual venues, and community meetings.

The award ceremony held at the Meiji Jingu Memorial Hall, and 19 awards were announced and presented. Rafael Manuel’s “Filipiñana” (co-produced by the Philippines and the UK) was selected for the world’s only Grand Prix named after George Lucas out of more than 6,000 submissions despite the pandemic. Next year’s Academy Award(R) nominations in the short film categories were also announced as the Best Short Awards from the Official Competitions, supported by Sony, (International, Asia International, Japan) and the Non-Fiction Competition. 

SSFF & ASIA 2021 is presenting the “Most Viewed Award” to a short film “Incident at School” by Jacob Pilgaard, which had been streamed as a nominee of the International Competition at the Online Grand Theater during this year’s festival.

SSFF & ASIA ‘s social media navigator, DIZ (@DIZfilms) posted their recommending comment at her Twitter as “This 24 min. horrible short makes people experience the incident at university with tense images. Too scary to breathe…….” And it counted over 80.7K♡ & 10.5K RT and 7.5M impression for the tweet. We counted over 35,000 views at the Online Grand Theater and it was proudly presented as the “Most Viewed Award”.

With other award-winning short films, “Incident at School” is going to be globally streamed online again from June 24th to June 30th.
