SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA — Guy Trengrove and Kiah Nagasaka from Cheil New Zealand have won the AD STARS 2021 New Stars AD competition, while three students from Wordshop Academy in the Russian Federation have won the Young Stars AD Competition. Both teams win KRW 5,000,000 (approx. US$4,000), while Trengrove and Nagasaka have won round-trip tickets to Korea and Wave Park lifetime passes.

New Stars is a career development program for junior creative professionals with less than 5 years of experience in advertising, marketing and PR. Competitors were invited to submit ideas to promote Wave Park in South Korea – the world’s largest surf park powered by Spanish company Wavegarden.

NEW STARS 2021 WINNERS:
GOLD – Guy Trengrove and Kiah Nagasaka from Cheil New Zealand
SILVER – Lorena Perez de Leon and Uriel Sanchez from Ogilvy Mexico
BRONZE – Cristian Mugarra Palma of BERLIN and Maximiliano O’ryan Molina of Atlas Digital in Chile
BRONZE – Nina Angelika Issabelle Reyes and Viktoria Jamie Carrelli from Havas Media Ortega, Philippines.

Nikki Sunga, Creative Director at BBDO GUERRERO, Philippines, was on this year’s New Stars jury: “‘Break Take’ was a simple insight attached to a technology execution and that’s what made it really stand out. The way they visually presented “taking waves” and “recording” it using the Accelerometer was so simple and easy to understand. When you look at hundreds of entries in one setting, simple ideas and executions stand out by a mile.”

“As for ‘Better Plans’ from Mexico – this was executed beautifully. The art direction and copy line were both on track. The insight ‘you could do something better today by surfing at Wave Park’ is so true and universal that no matter the country we’re judging from, we could clearly relate,” says Sunga.

There are also three Crystal-winning New Stars teams: Thailand’s Nonthapat Cholavit (Wunderman Thompson Bangkok) and Chanchai Laorattanaruengchai (freelance); the Philippine’s Cara Bautista from Ground Up Inc and Henri Glo from BBDO Guerrero; and Ayane Arita and Keisuke Yoshida from ADK Creative One Inc. Japan.

YOUNG STARS 2021 WINNERS:
The Young Stars program is designed to give university students a taste of what it is like to work in the creative industries. Competitors were asked to suggest campaign ideas to help realize Carbon Neutrality. Congratulations to this year’s Young Stars:
GOLD – Andrei Alekseev, Anastasiia Makurina and Daria Kalabina from Wordshop Academy, Russian Federation
SILVER – Jungmin Kim (School of Visual Arts), Yoonhwan Kim (Sangmyung University), Sehyun Park (Gachon University) and Jisu Seo (Hannam University), Republic of Korea
BRONZE – Suparoek Lueangchaipattana, Pratimakorn Chuachart, Benchaphorn Booraphaphirun and Unyapha Wangananon from King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Thailand
BRONZE – Cheung Chi Ho from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong.

Lize-Mari De Abreu, Deputy Creative Director at McCann1886 South Africa, helped to judge the Young Stars program: “The Gold-winning entry stood out immediately. It was well thought out, simple and had impressive prospects for efficacy. The Silver and Bronze winners are also ideas that made people change their behaviour in a simple, effective way – superb! Overall, I loved seeing how passionate creatives are about changing the world and realizing the important part we as creatives play.”

Ben Clare, Group Creative Director at Emotive in Australia adds: “It’s always exciting to see the standard of work being produced by talent rising through the ranks in our region. As ever, there was a really diverse mix of ideas and applications, but the ones that rose to the top showed a clarity of insight and a solution that was equally unexpected as it was genuinely purposeful. I walked away in no doubt that creativity is the power that can (and will) save the world going forward.”

This year’s top Young Stars winners may be offered internships at Cheil Worldwide, HSAD, Daehong Communications, Nongshim Communications, INNORED, Serviceplan Korea, ideot, Blue Focus Digital, and others.

“We would like to thank everyone who took part in this year’s New and Young Stars programs, along with our panel of industry professionals who chose this year’s winners. The quality and complexity of work submitted suggests the future of our industry is in very safe hands,” explains Hwan-Jin Choi, Chairperson of AD STARS.

All New & Young Stars winners will also be eligible to attend the Global MAD Academy, a new online AD STARS education initiative, which opens in October.
