HONG KONG — Icelandic-Chinese singer-songwriter Laufey shares her brand new song and its accompanying video, “Everything I Know About Love.” out via AWAL.
On the single Laufey offers: “This song is about all the magical things that I was told love was like but I’ve never gotten to experience. I’ve tried many times but fail every time. Turns out, I don’t know anything about love! The intro composed by Bach is played by myself on cello, and my mother and sister on violin.”
The new single follows Laufey’s previous singles, “Valentine”, “Love To Keep Me Warm” feat dodie, “Let You Break My Heart Again” feat Philaharmonia Orchestra and her recently being announced on the lineup for this year’s Newport Jazz Festival in July. Blending elements of jazz and pop with her honest lyrics, the serene track intimately captures the range of emotions, from budding excitement to subtle doubt, that can come with falling in love at her age of 22.
As the daughter of a classically-trained Chinese violinist mother and a jazz-loving Icelandic father, Laufey developed a deep admiration for classical and jazz music as a young person. Last year, Laufey released her debut EP Typical of Me, featuring “Street by Street” which landed her at the top of the Icelandic radio charts as well as hosting a new music radio series ‘Happy Harmonies’ on BBC Radio 3 and BBC Sounds. Despite being early in her career, Laufey has received praise from Billie Eilish, Willow Smith & V from BTS, performed beautiful live renditions of EP tracks “Like the Movies” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and “Best Friend” on Blogotheque and also played a sold-out show at EFG London Jazz Festival 2021. Typical of Me distills Laufey’s love of the two musical disciplines she grew up with, but also presents those timeless sounds from a modern woman’s perspective. Her music tells candid stories of falling in and out of love in the digital age and incorporates pop sensibilities within the jazz and classical sounds she molds into her own distinct sound.
