Known for his creativity, and a spanning beyond four decades, the passing of the Thin White Duke has left legions of music fans in shock.

Legendary rock icon David Bowie has left the building.

Following an 18-month-long battle with cancer, the artist was said to have passed away peacefully on January 10, 2016  –not long after releasing “Lazarus” online from his studio album Blackstar. The track was used in an off-Broadway production (also called Lazarus) initiated by Bowie, revisiting his character fromThe Man Who Fell To Earth –Thomas Jerome Newton.

Embodying different personas over the decades to suit his seemingly-unending creative output–music fans had Major Tom, Ziggy Stardust, and the Thin White Duke. Cineastes witnessed his turns at acting as Jareth, the Goblin King (Labyrinth); Nikola Tesla (The Prestige); Thomas Jerome Newton; and John Blaylock (The Hunger). And of course, he wasn’t above the occasional cameo in Zoolander or SpongeBob SquarePants. Always stylishly kitted, whether onstage or attempting to go incognito, the artist might have tried to hide his celebrity–but there was something about him that would somehow give him away–like light emanating from a star.

Bowie will be remembered for his elegance, humanitarian work –and above all his artistic talent/legacy. He is survived by his second wife Iman; daughter Alexandria; and son, director Duncan Jones.
