SINGAPORE — Homegrown financial services company Singlife will sponsor the SCC Rugby Academy, a non-profit and volunteer-run junior rugby club, until the end of 2024. The sponsorship will enable the SCC Rugby Academy to sustain its academy scholarship program, providing age-appropriate coaching, fitness training and exposure to the sport of rugby for Singaporean youths.
The SCC Rugby Academy scholarship is an integral part of the club’s ethos, which aims to give every child the chance to participate, compete and express a life-long love of the game regardless of their financial circumstances. The Academy collaborates with local schools to promote the sport, recruits budding players and gives them the opportunity to attend free weekly training sessions. The youths participate in international league games — with training kits and travel expenses fully paid for under the scholarship.
Debra Soon, Group Head of Brand, Communications and Marketing at Singlife, said, “We are truly delighted to announce our sponsorship with the SCC Rugby Academy and invest into growing the game’s grassroots base. As a sporting institution, the SCC Rugby Academy has meaningfully impacted many youths, giving them a chance to explore their interests, but more importantly, improve their physical and mental health as well as develop meaningful social relationships that will transcend the sport.”
Suhaimi Amran, a coach at SCC Rugby Academy, said, “Singlife’s support will play an integral role in propelling our scholarship program to greater heights in the coming years. The best part about being a coach is witnessing a new generation of players grow up with the game and using our training sessions to build life-long connections with one another both on and off the pitch. The more individuals we can extend this opportunity to, the greater the impact we can make for the future generation – with Singlife’s resources, we can now achieve just that.”
Scholars will train under the guidance of experienced national rugby team players with opportunities to advance to the senior team and have a once in a lifetime opportunity to represent the Singapore National Team. Currently, the program has over 20 players enrolled and is open to all Singaporean youths who may not have the financial means to access the sport.
