SINGAPORE — For World Environment Day, women-first dating app Bumble highlighted how attitudes towards the environment are impacting love lives. Welcome to the era of “Green Dating,” where concerns around climate change and having an eco-conscious lifestyle are increasingly regarded as green flags.

According to Bumble’s most recent survey*, 73% of singles in Singapore (aged 18 to 41) care about living an environmentally sustainable lifestyle. one in three Singapore singles (33%) indicated that they personally care about being environmentally conscious, and expect their partners to share the same sentiment. In fact, according to the Bumble Singapore community**, 32% believe that it is now more important to share the social causes and/or political issues that you believe in early in a relationship.

Lucille McCart, Bumble’s APAC Communications Director, shared, “The rise of Green Dating marks a movement towards values-driven dating. In Singapore, the use of the Environmentalism badge increased by nearly 25%*** in 2022, demonstrating a growing desire to form romantic connections with people who share similar values and priorities. To make this more seamless, Bumble has expanded our range of Interest Badges so people can prominently display the cause that matters to them. Today, many young people perceive someone who cares about the environment as a more desirable partner, not only because it makes them appear more considerate and sensitive, but also because they hope that their eco-conscious lifestyle will be a positive influence on their own lives.”

Ready to give “Green Dating” a shot? Here are five tips to get started:

  1. Go for a bicycle ride. If you are looking for a zero-emissions date, you can’t do better than a bicycle ride! It’s a great way to get active with your Bumble match as well as take in the sights and sounds of Singapore’s various nature trails. Why not cycle to a cafe for a well-deserved treat, too?
  2. Cook meals together using locally sourced, organic ingredients. Cooking together can be really romantic, and why not lower your carbon footprint by supporting local farmers while you’re at it?
  3. Participate in a big beach clean-up. The cleaning of our coastline has never been so important. To all lovers of the land and the sea, get to know your date by participating in the fight against coastal pollution.
  4. Take a relaxing walk at one of Singapore’s many public parks. Singapore may be a small island city but it’s home to plenty of nature reserves and parks. From Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve to Fort Canning Park, you’ll have plenty of time to dive deeper and get to know your date.
  5. Most importantly, add the environmentalism badge to your Bumble dating profile to find like-minded individuals you can connect with!
