PASIG CITY – In an effort to keep up with the quickly updating trends, it’s so tempting to hastily come up with something using whatever new technology that is out just so we don’t get left behind. However, putting technology first and the story later almost always doesn’t work. Especially so in the case of virtual reality or VR.

This year’s Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity’s film craft category saw more VR films than ever. The entrants made fascinating use of this new technology, Laura Gregory, Founder and CEO of Great Guns and Film Craft Lions jury president admits. But most of these films, she also noticed, lacked the foundation of every great work–effective storytelling.

We, in adobo magazine, are one of the many brands and publishers who want to use this amazing new technology to enrich our content. But before we dive into any alternate reality, we must first learn how to effectively use VR as a means to tell our stories.

So, on Monday, our friends from NuWorks: Manny Gonzales, Strategy and Analytics Head, Mike Ng, R&D and IT director, Vandy Pesariilo, creative officer, and Raffy Casas, producer and Informer Media: Jane Culla, executive producer and Nelo Maningas, director, held a workshop on the basics of VR and how we can use this technology to improve our content.

In this workshop, we learned that VR storytelling is not simply giving our audience a 360 view of anything, it’s about adding value to a new experience. In a nutshell, we can do this by identifying the pain points, formulating solutions to address these pain points with the use of VR and ultimately, creating stories that would effectively engage the audience.
