MANILA, PHILIPPINES — One of the breakout sessions under the Web vertical for Day Three at IMMAP‘s Digicon 2023 was headed by Metasports CEO and Co-founder Joe Josue, who talked about “The Intersection of Community, Technology, and Entertainment.” As a subsidiary of Blockchain Space, Joe’s team specializes in gaming entertainment across Web2 and Web3.

In his talk, Joe mapped out the evolution of how people interact with the web, and how this has affected how communities have been created and tapped through gaming.

Firstly, he illustrated the evolution of the Web: From Web1, which introduced the internet to the world, specifically allowing people to read content from an unlimited source of information online; to reading and writing on Web2, which is also the emergence of social media platforms and creating content online; and now to Web3, which Joe described as the era of “read, write and own.”

As he put it, this roadmap illustrates the natural progression of consumers now being able to say, “I can own a digital product not defined by a single entity or corporation.” This latest stage has empowered users to not just consume content (Web1) or create content (Web2), but also now own content online – and digital products, at that.

Bringing this back to the community, Joe then mapped out the evolution of gaming alongside the Web: From Web1 where gamers started playing with each other through mass multiplayer online games, to Web2’s introduction of game content streaming, which put the spotlight on communities that gamers can interact with and not just play with. Now, Web3 has given gaming communities the chance to share value with the people they play and interact with, opening up a new world of opportunities to connect and engage.

“Creators have become the new trusted face of these brands,” Joe stated. With the continuous growth and loyalty of the gaming communities, he underlined that creators have now blurred the line between a customer, a community member, and someone who backs them financially. Several platforms have emerged over the past few years that allow gaming creators to engage people through all these different ways.

So, how can Web3 empower the creator community? He enumerated three points:

  • Truly own your audience and community
  • Create tailor-fit experiences for your community
  • Get better collab opportunities with brands & agencies

Lastly, he wrapped up his talk with the following key takeaways:

  • The creator economy is the sector in the market today you cannot ignore
  • The future of the creator economy is a two-way street, with communities as the core of its growth
  • Web3 is the movement and tech that best suits the intersection between creators, communities and brands

He left the audience with a very important note on the weight of engaging communities. That is, the value of investing in creators that not only opens platforms for consumer engagement, but also legitimizes the value of a brand.

“Communities are at the center of the growth and development of the creator economy,” he underlined.
