Globally, the Philippines ranks first in terms of social media use with an average of 3.7 hours a day spent on social media platforms according to the Statista Digital Market Outlook. The number of active Twitter users in the Philippines is also among the fastest growing worldwide.

In 2015, Eat Bulaga’s segment called #Kalyeserye featuring Maine Mendoza and Alden Richards, famously known as #ALDub, was breaking Twitter day by day. On one of its episodes, 26 million tweets were posted using the hashtag #ALDubEBforLOVE making it the second most tweeted topic second to Super Bowl XLIX with 28.4 million tweets worldwide. This prompted Twitter Asia Pacific and Middle East Vice President Rishi Jaitly to call this “a global a phenomenon.”

To this day, fans continue to support #ALDub and love teams from other networks like #JaDine and #LizQuen on Twitter, and through daily collective effort, put these hashtags on the trending topics list, strengthening Jaitly’s statement in 2015 that the platform has become TV’s “social soundtrack”.

“Southeast Asia is an exciting and fast growing region for Twitter. We are seeing strong demand from marketers in the region to leverage Twitter as a live conversation platform that connects their brands with a global audience. We are happy to announce that Twitter will be partnering MediaDonuts to augment and strengthen our existing presence in the Philippines and Thailand. We look forward to working closely with MediaDonuts to grow the business together,” commented Maya Hari, Managing Director for India and Southeast Asia, Twitter.

Google and Facebook have already opened offices in Manila to better localize their services and advertising opportunities. Should Twitter soon follow suit?
