The Facebook page urged live viewers to comment the word “FIRE” to melt the ice, which would have been a clever gimmick, had the stream not stopped working about 15 minutes into the video. On the bright side, actors Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark), Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth), and Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) appeared on occasion, encouraging viewers to post comments.
Every now and then, the feed would return and get interrupted, until about 3:09pm when the stream came to a close and the premiere date was revealed. Around 162,000 people remained tune in, in spite of technical difficulties.
With an average viewership of 10.6 million per episode in season 6, HBO’s TV series is based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series.
While the show’s return is eagerly anticipated, creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have confirmed only 13 remaining episodes for the series, split seven over six for 2017 and 2018, respectively.
Because winter is really coming in the forthcoming season, the often spring-released premiere was pushed back shooting schedules in waiting for colder weather. Because the Emmys consider TV show nominations only until May, Game of Thrones will not be qualified for an entry in 2017.
