BACOLOD, PHILIPPINES — The Bacollywood Summer Workshops, all geared up for its 2024 edition from June 17 to July 13, has revealed that two renowned Negrense filmmakers will take the helm of this year’s technical courses.
Manny Montelibano will lead the Film Production classes, which will run from Mondays to Fridays, from 8:00 am to 12 noon. With a solid background in the industry, Manny has held key positions at the University of St. La Salle, including Technical and Artistic Director from 1994 to 2015, while also teaching Mass Communications from 2005 to 2011. Active in cultural organizations like the Black Artists in Asia Association, his contributions have garnered him prestigious accolades, such as the Garbo sa Bisaya Award and the Excellence Award in the Field of the Arts from the City of Bacolod in 2016.
Manny’s artistic endeavors have also received global acclaim, featuring in exhibitions and festivals worldwide, including The Ocean After Nature and Sync, Memory: Video Space & Video Image. Beyond his artistic pursuits, he has played pivotal roles in film engagements, serving as a director, producer, and cinematographer, alongside conducting workshops, seminars, and conferences on film production, curatorial practices, and arts management.
Meanwhile, the multi-talented Jay Abello will instruct in the Cinematography course. The class is scheduled for Mondays to Fridays, 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
With a Bachelor’s degree in Film and Audio-Visual Communication from the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and a notable career in Philippine cinema, Jay brings a depth of knowledge and creativity to the Bacollywood Summer Workshops. He is presently the lighting director for GMA Network‘s Asawa Ng Asawa Ko. Previously, he held the same role for I Left My Heart in Sorsogon in 2021 and Ika-Anim-na-Utos from 2016 to 2018.
Jay directed Flotsam in 2015 and served as the cinematographer for Hari ng Tondo in 2014, a Cinemalaya finalist directed by Carlitos Sigeon-Reyna. Additionally, he worked as Director of Photography for A Moment in Time in 2012 and Aparisyon in the same year, both under different directors. He also has experience in documentary films, taking on the role of Director of Photography for Pureza and Kano: the American and his Harem, among others.
In addition to technical courses, the workshops also offer acting courses catering to various age groups and skill levels. As Bacollywood prepares for another exciting summer, participants can look forward to a hands-on journey of learning, creativity, and collaboration — guided by the expertise and passion of instructors like Manny and Jay.
