The Asia Institute of Management, the Asian pioneering business management education, recently organized a forum entitled “Game Changers: The Impact of Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship” to cap off its 50th Anniversary celebrations, held a the Shangri-La at The Fort, featuring Nobel Laureate, Prof. Dan Shechtman, and several business and government leaders from the region as panelists.

  1. Prof. Shechtman is among the early believers that a scientist can and should turn their discoveries into viable business enterprise. He designed the first Technological Entrepreneurship course after he observed a glaring gap —- while Technion prepared their graduates to be hired for big business, it offered a little training for scientists who wanted to go into business for themselves. Prof Shechtman began teaching the course in the mid-80s, a full generation before tech start-ups became the burgeoning industry that is today.

  2. Prof. Shechtman’s work is directly aligned with the vision of AIM’s School of Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship (SITE). SITE is the first graduate school of business in the Philippines to offer postgraduate studies in data science (Master of Science in Data Science) and innovation (Master of Science in Innovation and Business). Meanwhile, the Master in Entrepreneurship (ME) program has been re-launched as part of the SITE disciplines.

Fortunato Dela Pena (Department of Science and Technology), Jaime Agusto Zobel de Ayala (Ayala Corporation), Doris Magsaysay-Ho (Magsaysay Group of Companies), Stan Chi (Acer Computers), Narayana Murthy (Infosys), and Prof. Chris Monterola (AIM-SITE). Each of the panelists shared their views on how innovation is nurtured in their institutions and the concrete ways by which these ideas are brought to fruition.
