SHANGHAI – Sweetshop’s Andrew Lang is behind a vibrant film for Carlsberg from Grey Hong Kong that celebrates the energy and diversity of Chinese New Year.
Shot in Shanghai, the film brings to life a variety of different textures and energies that Chinese New Year encompasses.
Entitled ‘Going Up’, the film centres around a couple who, when all the buttons in an elevator are accidentally pressed, are thrust into a series of wild, unpredictable worlds. What they see when the doors open is expressionistic and dream-like. While they themselves remain totally in the real world. This intercutting of real / surreal drives the energy and excitement of the film.
Andrew said, “In the film we used different colours and textures to highlight the variety that exists in how people celebrate Chinese New Year. Each time the elevator door opens, the viewer is launched into a different world. The opening and closing of the doors of the elevator are used like a pendulum that dictate the cut, and the speed of our film puts Carlsberg at the centre of the party.”
