KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA – Ensemble Worldwide, and PETRONAS released another fully animated film, to commemorate Deepavali the festival of lights, as part of the continuation of PETRONAS’ festive films theme for 2020 – ‘Our Unique Family’

The film titled ‘Vattam’ brings to light the cherished family tradition of making murukku, a must-have snack prepared in the lead up to Deepavali festivities. The story centers on four siblings, personified through the main ingredients and utensils for making murukku. The upbeat musical sees the children’s personalities brought to life through song and dance, spiralling out of control when the siblings bicker on who places highest importance in the murukku-making process.

Didi Pirinyuang, Executive Creative Director of Ensemble Worldwide commented, “The tradition of making murukku has special importance for families as they to catch up, bond and create unforgettable moments in the kitchen during the festive period. We felt it was important to tell this story of a dying tradition which is symbolic of a family reunion. ‘Vattam’ loosely translates to mean circle and represents the wholeness of family to complete each other. Every ingredient and step of the murukku making process is important. As each piece comes together, the process becomes whole. Big or small, we all have a role to play together. As a family.”

The film closes with a reminder from the father on the importance of sticking together.

Didi adds, “We intentionally featured a father figure to show a different side to the family. We wanted to show that fathers play an important role in helping families stick together and it isn’t solely the feminine domain to champion things in the kitchen. His message to his children is that it isn’t about the spotlight, but how we all shine brighter when we work together.

“The music is incredibly catchy, and the entire team has really rallied together in true ‘Vattam’ spirit. We hope this entertaining musical will spark joy to all Malaysians as we seek to rediscover the little joys in life, despite the backdrop of our challenges.”

The film was produced with animation studio Sandbox Animation, with music by local artists Extreme Music. It went live on PETRONAS’ official YouTube channel and Facebook Page on 9th November, with a 60-second commercial version aired on TV.
