Awards: GoodGovPH, Provincial Gov’t of Laguna award 43 youth groups with 1st Seal of Good Youth Governance

LAGUNA, PHILIPPINES — GoodGovPH, Inc. and the Provincial Government of Laguna awarded 43 youth groups with the first Seal of Good Youth Governance (SGYG) during the awarding ceremony held last September 24, 2021.

Good governance for the youth, by the youth

Inspired by the DILG Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG), the SGYG is a merit-based recognition program for SKs, Local Youth Development Councils and Offices, and Youth Organizations that exhibit good governance in their day-to-day operations.

Youth volunteers developed and spearheaded the SGYG program after a series of consultations earlier this year. “Kaya ng kabataan na manguna sa pagtataguyod ng mabuting pamamahala, iyan ang ideya sa likod ng Seal of Good Youth Governance,” explained SGYG Program Director Coby Cabuhat.

Participants attended training workshops about good youth governance to assist in preparing for their requirements. “Sa sama-sama nating paglago, hindi tayo nag-iisa sa ating laban para sa mabuting pamamahala,” said SGYG Program Co-Director Alecs Marasigan.

National and local government support for youth governance

SGYG highlighted the strong roles of national and local governments in promoting participatory governance and youth participation.

“We are one in this endeavor to raise the standards of strong and competent youth governance, streamlining good governance practices not only in the youth sector but in our government institutions at large,” said PCOO Undersecretary Kris Ablan as he presented special awards to outstanding youth groups.

“When it comes to promoting good local governance programs, we have limited time or resources, yet we have so many great ideas and programs that we can replicate,” emphasized Galing Pook Foundation Executive Director Georgina Hernandez-Yang. “Pwedeng pwede tayo mag-kopyahan sa mga magagaling na SK Federation at Barangays, Local Youth Development Councils, at Local Youth Development Offices.”

Youth as champions of good governance

Nominees were scored based on their efforts to promote the following: youth participation, transparency and accountability, effectiveness and efficiency, inclusivity and equity, and responsiveness and sustainability.

Out of 75 registered nominees, 43 youth groups were accredited as they successfully met the minimum requirements for the gold, silver, and bronze SGYGs. Biñan City won the most number of awards with 8 winning youth groups.

Future of SGYG

Piloted in the Province of Laguna in 2021, GoodGovPH affirmed its commitment to implement SGYG nationwide starting 2022. “Dito nagsisimula ang hamon na ipagpatuloy ang ating nasimulan. Ipagpatuloy natin ang mabuting pamamahala para sa kabataan at para sa bayan,” said GoodGovPH Executive Director Dexter Yang.

SGYG 2021 is spearheaded by GoodGovPH, a youth-led movement for good governance in the Philippines. It is co-presented by the Provincial Government of Laguna, Youth Development Affairs Office of Laguna, PCOO-FOI Philippines, National Movement of Young Legislators, Galing Pook, and the Positive Youth Development Network.
