MANILA, PHILIPPINES — The International Association of Business Communications (IABC) Philippines, the organization behind the highly coveted Philippine Quill Awards, has named the recipients for the CEO EXCEL Awards 2020. Counted among these honorees is adobo magazine founder, President, and Editor-in-Chief Angel Guerrero, who will be given the CEO EXCEL Award for Communications.
The CEO EXCEL Awards is conferred annually by IABC Philippines to top-level business executives and organization leaders from the private, government, academic and non-profit sectors. When one is an awardee, one is an acknowledged champion of excellent communication to achieve business goals and a leader for good governance and responsible corporate citizenship who inspires others to serve the greater good.
The CEO EXCEL Awardees comprise an esteemed group of outstanding individuals who have either shown their strength in communications or have utilized the discipline to propel themselves as excellent and impactful leaders in their respective fields.
Joining Angel as fellow CEO Excel awardees for Communications for 2020 are research director for the Center for Research and Communications Dr. Bernardo Villegas of the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P), Director of TVUP Dr. Grace Javier Alfonso, Senior International Public Relations and Communication Academic for the School of Media and Communication of The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University Dr. Marianne Dayrit-Sison FPRIA, and Anak TV Foundation President Elvira Go.
McDonald’s Philippine Managing Director Margot Torres and Manila Electric Company (MERALCO) Vice-President for Marketing, Customer Solutions, and Product Development Jose Antonio Valdez complete the recipients for the CEO Excel Awards for Communication.
Established in 2005, the Awards are given by IABC Philippines, the first country chapter established outside of the United States of the San Francisco-based IABC. That organization is one of the largest business communication organizations in the world, with some 11,000 member-professionals in over 70 countries.
As an advocate and supporter of Philippine and Asian creativity, Angel Guerrero found her voice in adobo magazine which she founded in 2006 following a 15-year advertising career that saw her handling blue-chip global and local clients. A true labor of love, adobo magazine has become the Philippines’ most influential and indispensable publication on advertising, marketing, brand communications, media, design, art, and culture under Angel’s stewardship.
Miles Young, former Worldwide Chairman and CEO of Ogilvy & Mather, previously remarked that adobo magazine “is without a doubt, a top publication in the world. It speaks with an authentic voice.” In 2016, Angel has conferred the first-ever Asia-Pacific Tambuli Crimson Award as an eminent industry leader in marketing communication for her contribution to the advancement while creating positive change in one’s country, region, or the world.
In 2017, the AD STARS International Awards in Busan, South Korea awarded her with the AD STARS International Lifetime Achievement Award.
In 2010, 2011, and 2013, adobo magazine won an unprecedented three-time Top Award, equivalent to the Grand Prix, at the Philippine Quill Awards. The publication has continued to amass several awards of excellence in recent years, besting the country’s leading media and communications companies.
The brand adobo magazine has extended beyond its print and online assets to learning modules on creativity to up-skill talents in the value chain – The adobo Festival of Ideas, adobo Design Week, adobo Masterclasses, and in the universities, the class School of Creativity.
Amid all of these accolades, Angel continues to espouse the value of creativity as the currency in driving the creative economy of the Philippines. She sits on the board of the Creative Economy Council of the Philippines (CECP) and the Communication Design Association of the Philippines (CDAP) both of which she co-founded. She also sat on the board of the United Print Media Group (UPMG) for over 10 years and is currently part of the Design Advisory Council of the Philippines working with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
For the past 14 years, adobo magazine is unrivaled in its coverage of local and international creative festivals in the form of the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, the Asia Pacific ADFEST, AD STARS, Spikes Asia Festival of Creativity, The One Show, London International Awards (LIA), D&AD, and the Philippine Ad Summit.
Born to Filipino parents in Thailand, Angel lived in the country for 11 years. She then moved to Malaysia for two years, followed by a seven-year residency in Singapore. She returned to her home country of the Philippines as a young adult and subsequently planted her roots here. Angel is married to a noted creative director, has two grown-up children, is a member of the Slowfood movement, and enjoys time in her kitchen.

The CEO Excel Awardees for Leadership were also named, honoring Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat. Institute of Corporate Directors President and CEO Dr. Alfredo Pascual, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto, Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso, and The French Baker, Inc. CEO Johnlu Go Kua.
The awards ceremony was originally scheduled for early 2020 but was canceled due to the lockdown. A virtual ceremony has since been held to honor the awardees.
