THE PHILIPPINES – NOVEMBER 28, 2011: On Bonifacio Day, your two-wheeler will bring light to homes in the dark. Isang Litrong Liwanag (A Liter of Light) has organized Bike to Light, which aims to bring bikers bearing solar bulbs from Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City to Pinaglabanan Shrine San Juan.
Isang Litrong Liwanag, a sustainable lighting project, is the latest venture of MyShelter Foundation. Made of plastic soda bottles filled with a simple solution, solar bottle bulbs can provide light equivalent to a 50-watt light bulb when installed on the roof. The aim is to light a million homes by 2012.
Along with the Rotary Club International District 3830 and the Armed Forces of the Philippines, 10,000 solar bottle bulbs will be brought to 30 communities in 17 cities throughout the National Capital Region and installed in the homes of thousands of beneficiaries. Rotary Club, AFP and volunteers will take part in the counting and loading of the bottle-bulbs. CPA-volunteers will be present to officiate and validate the Guinness World Record petition for the biggest grassroots green-lighting program.
Reigning Miss Earth 2010 Nicole Faria will be sharing their message of support. Miss Philippines-Earth has already been actively involved in the campaign. “In fact, they were very enthusiastic when they helped prepare and install solar bottle bulbs in Payatas last July,” shares Illac Diaz, executive director of MyShelter Foundation.
Registration opens at 6am, when participants can begin picking up the bottle bulb, t-shirt and messenger bag. The program starts at 7am. The bikers are expected to arrive in San Juan at 9am for the symbolic turnover of lights to community representatives.
