NEW YORK – December 26, 2013 – In the aftermath of catastrophic Typhoon Haiyan, Emerald Brand partnered with Unishippers of Queens and Operation USA to deliver much needed paper goods to those affected by the storm.
Known as Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines, Typhoon Haiyan is the strongest storm ever recorded at landfall, the brand noted. With wind speeds reaching 235mp/h and a death toll of over 6,000, the damage from the storm has been devastating.
The rising number and severity of tropical storms continues to pose the question of a connection between natural disasters and global climate change. Recently, scientists have expressed concern that these events, due to increased carbon emissions and greenhouse gases, may be caused in part by human activity.
"We provide disaster relief aid wherever we can, but our goal is to hopefully prevent catastrophes of this nature from happening in the future," said Sharon Young, Director of Sustainability at Emerald Brand, in a press release. "There are so many small changes we can make in our everyday lives to minimize our impact on the environment. Whether or not humans are the root of the problem, we need to at least try to be the solution."
