SORSOGON, PHILIPPINES — Bicolano artist-curator, Geri Matthew “Choi” Carretero will be conducting a webinar on community-based art on February 11, 2022 at 2:00PM via zoom in celebration of the National Arts Month.
The online talk by Mr. Carretero, which is organized by the Museo Sorsogon and the Provincial Government of Sorsogon, will cover topics on community art and socially engaged art including the democratization of culture in order to bring about an awareness and appreciation of art to a wide section of society.
“I will be discussing various initiatives by visual artists and art collectives who were able to work within communities to create public murals, collaborative plays, exhibits, and compositions as a way of empowering people,” Carretero said.
A multidisciplinary artist, Carretero co-founded the Kurit-Lagting Art Collective which is an artistic collaboration of Bicolano artists from Sorsogon, Albay, Catanduanes, Masbate, and Camarines provinces with art advocacies on human rights and the environment. The Art Collective is a member of the Sorsogon Arts Council and the Concerned Artists of the Philippines Bicol Chapter.
Carretero has also exhibited his art pieces and has curated shows in various museums and galleries with themes centering on migration, displacement, and disability. His installations, photographs, and paintings speak about people’s voluntary and forced migrations; they tell stories of refuge, political and environmental turmoils, and territorial struggles.
At present, he is finishing his Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of the Philippines, Diliman.
