MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Art is often associated with beauty and aesthetics. While there is no one definition and medium of it, most function to delight one’s senses and many artists have tried and succeeded.
One artist whose works provoke the mind and warrant a second look is Italian visual artist Federico Clapis. Since 2015, he has been creating sculptures and digital works that go beneath the surface.
Clapis’ works are often the result of humanity and technology’s intersection. One of his earlier sculptures, “Connection,” shows an infant in the womb that upon a closer look is more consumed by a mobile device.
This theme transcends onto his other works. “Babydrone” is his own unique take on the tale of storks carrying babies by their beaks. However, Clapis’ work replaces the carrier with a different aerial vehicle.
“Every artwork can be an instrument for self-analysis,” Clapis told My Modern Met in an interview. One of his more haunting sculptures, “Addolorata Concezione” exhibits a woman cradling a baby through a virtual reality headset. Addolorata Concezione translates to sorrowful conception.
Clapis continues to render works that are relevant to modern society and with technology evolving exponentially, it’s only natural to expect more from the artist.
