MANILA, PHILIPPINES — At a time when the world has been thrown into uncertainty, artists sought solace in art to express themselves and process their emotions through it. Famed for his photography, Jayson Isaac rekindled his love for painting born out of the challenges of the pandemic.
He will be showcasing, for the very first time, a captivating exhibition of his artwork that promises to leave a lasting impression on art enthusiasts and its broader community through a collection called Fidem: 1st Solo Art Exhibit by Jayson Isaac.
Passion for painting, reignited
Jayson Isaac has always been passionate about visual arts, primarily exhibiting it through photography and capturing big celebrities in the country; he always had artistic pursuits ever since he was a student. His humble beginnings date back as early as the days when he participated in poster-making and drawing contests in school.
When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, Jayson had the opportunity to reignite his passion for painting, which eventually became his way of occupying his free time. However, in 2021, the artist’s story took a turn when he lost his beloved husband, Raymund Isaac, to the said virus. Finding ways to cope and deal with his pain caused him to seek comfort in paint brushes and canvases. He started painting once more and turned to art to console him from the grief he was experiencing.
A manifestation of devotion
His lowest points brought out something in Jayson that he didn’t know was there: his faith.
Jayson shared, “The only thing I’m afraid of now is losing my faith.” Waiting for his husband to show signs of recovery, Jayson felt like all he could do was hope and pray for Raymund’s return to health. He was introduced to saints by friends and family members, and he prayed to them as fervently as he could at St. Patrick Church in San Francisco, California.
This devotion caused Jayson to work on his paintings and the end result was nothing short of exceptional. Hence, his debut art exhibit is entitled Fidem, which is the Latin translation for faith. He portrayed his perspective by painting partial images of the saints he was praying to in his time of despair. He remembered with intricate detail the image of his idols he sought help from and painted it as a way to showcase his faith.
His works, which are mostly acrylic on canvas and wood, are named after the image or idol he commemorated. Some of these are entitled Nazareno, Padre Pio, Guadalupe, Divine Mercy and St. Expedite.
“I found comfort in painting during those challenging times,” Jayson shared. “It became a way for me to process my emotions and channel my grief in a healthy way. I believe that art has the power to heal and unite, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my journey through my work.”
This art exhibition is Jayson’s way of telling his story of love, life, and loss. Finally being able to share this with the world is a nod to his incredible journey from the lens to the canvas, and is also a testament to the power of creativity in the face of adversity.
Some of the art pieces will also be on sale and proceeds will be donated to Positive Action Foundation Philippines Incorporated (PAFPI), a foundation dedicated to empowering and helping people living with HIV Philippines and AIDS.
