AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS – Creative e-com agency Build in Amsterdam has crafted an award-winning digital adventure for leading Swiss outdoor specialists Mammut. EXPEDITION BAIKAL – an immersive shoppable experience which takes shoppers deep into the heart of Siberia – has won E-Commerce Site of the Year at Awwwards, one of the world’s foremost digital award shows. It is the fourth time Build in Amsterdam has won the award, an achievement no other agency in the world has matched.

EXPEDITION BAIKAL follows Swiss extreme mountaineer, Dani Arnold, as he journeys into the heart of Siberia to conquer ten new ice climbing routes – braving roaring winds, snow and ice. Arnold’s expedition was to a place so extreme that few athletes have dared to explore it: Lake Baikal, the deepest lake on earth, with temperatures as low as -40°C.

Build in Amsterdam cast the extreme adventure into a digital form to create a shoppable expedition. The capsule collection minisite is for Mammut’s top-of-the-range Eiger Extreme collection, which features high-tech materials, unbeatable workmanship and maximum functionality.

The experience is truly immersive, the user taken along an expedition trail covering mountains, cliffs, walls of ice, caves and of course the frozen Baikal lake itself. The story seamlessly integrates stunning photography with sound effects, quotes from Dani Arnold, visuals and video. To endure such an extreme adventure – and temperatures as low as -40°C – Arnold is protected by the Eiger Extreme product range: eight different products, including a jacket, snow trousers, helmet and harness, are featured in pop-ups in the experience as he uses them.

The Awwwards jury and community voted EXPEDITION BAIKAL as the E-Commerce Site of the Year as they recognized it as “A shining beacon of light, guiding the way in digital design”.

James Noble, Jury member, Awwwards: “From the thoughtful UX and creative UI touches, to the use of parallax content with purpose, this is a truly sublime mobile experience. It leverages the ever present ‘scrolling’ on mobile to engage users and encourage information to be consumed, and displays an impeccable attention to detail and a considered audience experience.”

Daan Klaver, Co-Founder & Creative Director, Build in Amsterdam: “We create digital flagship stores. That’s our philosophy at Build in Amsterdam. By combining strategy, branding and e-commerce we create emotional clicks that truly convey a brand story and drive conversion. It’s an incredible honour and achievement for the whole team to win this for the 4th time. Where Mammut is setting the benchmark for extreme sports gear, we are setting the benchmark for creative e-commerce.”

Martijn Jegerings, Head of Digital Marketing, Mammut Sports Group: “At Mammut, we are dedicated to providing people with what they need to go on to the most extreme expeditions. We are creating a world where people are connected to the mountains. Not only by our products, but also by the experiences we create. Expedition Baikal brings together the beauty of the real-life world, with the possibilities of the digital world, transporting the horizontal and vertical ice onto screens globally. Making you part of Dani’s journey. Deeply feeling and understanding why the gear he wears was designed for such icy expeditions.”
