PHILIPPINES – MAY 27, 2011 – There was no way for passengers to tell whether the meter of their taxi they are riding has been tampered with. The final bill used to be the only clue. Until now.
Y&R Philippines has come up with a way to catch taxi meter fraud in Manila with the Nokia Taxi Meter, an app for Nokia smartphones that uses GPS to countercheck the fare and enables users to save trip information and report the fraud to the authorities via SMS. The agency says that the app will soon be reconfigured to work in other cities around the world.

The Land Transportation Office, the Philippine government office concerned with land vehicles, has officially endorsed the app. With Nokia’s continued popularity in the country, the app could start a commuter revolution.
