Did anyone (aside from us) see the “Song of Ice and Fire” reference?
In its 2018 Super Bowl ad, PepsiCo pitted star actors Peter Dinklage and Morgan Freeman against each other to launch new flavours of Doritos and Mountain Dew.
What turned up was a pop culture reference fest from the teaser down to the actual 60-second Super Bowl spot.
The teaser had Dinklage, known for his role in HBO series Game of Thrones, and Freeman, a fan favourite for having a voice fit to be the “voice of God” (and Waze), practicing tongue twisters with their “coaches”, hip-hop icons Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliot.
Days before the Super Bowl, PepsiCo and agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners finally revealed the showdown: a fiery and icy lip-sync battle between Dinklage and Freeman.
Dinklage represented Doritos Blaze and so he marched down a burning hall syncing to the tune of “Look at Me Now”. Mountain Dew Ice had Freeman in its corner with Missy Elliot’s “Get Ur Freak On”.
As one of the front-runners of the Super Bowl season this year, the spot has more than 2.4 million views on YouTube and more than 3.3 million views on Facebook.
