Ogilvy’s new Rio Mints spot a breath of fresh air in conservative Hong Kong advertising scene

ASIA PACIFIC – January 9, 2014 – Ogilvy & Mather Hong Kong has launched a ground-breaking advertising campaign for the Hong Kong-based brand, Rio Mints. The campaign, ‘Surprisingly Fruity’ introduces a breath of fresh air to Hong Kong’s conservative advertising scene, combining light-hearted humor with some odd puppetry, Ogilvy said in a press release.
 

 
The campaign will see a series of commercials rolled out over time, airing in Hong Kong across TV and online platforms, primarily YouTube. The first of which, launched through Rio Mints Facebook page, is ‘Surprisingly Burgundy’ for Rio Burgundy Grape Mints. The commercial features a young man and woman seated on a bench in their beach attire – the man holding a purple llama stuffed toy. The woman offers the man one of her Rio Burgundy Grape Mints, which he happily takes. The young man is so astounded by the unexpected burst of flavour that he fails to notice his toy llama come to life and start licking his nipple. The ad reads: “SurprisinglyFruity”.  
 
The campaign has been pioneered by Reed Collins, Chief Creative Officer at Ogilvy & Mather Hong Kong. Collins commented, “We wanted to try and do something that not only amuses and entertains viewers, but to get people talking about Rio Mints over it’s competitors. The Surprisingly Fruity campaign has been a hell of a lot of fun to make and we’re already beginning to see success online. There is plenty of room for and a real hunger by brands and consumers for all styles of marketing in Hong Kong.”
