MANILA, PHILIPPINES– Nothing quite comes close to the comfort one’s family can bring. Be it suffering from retrenchment, cyber bullying, heartbreak, or even grief, facing upheavals is more difficult without being surrounded by people who can support and lift one’s spirits.

MullenLowe’s latest advert for Knorr, “Kanya-kanya” captures this picture perfectly. The film sheds light on the struggles each family member is facing. With the father being laid off from work, the son coping with cyber-bullying through mobile games, and the daughter going through a rough break-up—scenarios that are all too real and happens to anyone.

“Stories can bring to light things that are difficult to talk about. While a story cannot be a real solution to real struggles, it can still help in its own way. We wanted to highlight the power of connection – having someone you can reach out to can provide comfort when times are tough,” MullenLowe’s Deputy Executive Creative Director, Roman Carlo Olivarez told adobo magazine.

The pace picks up when the mother decides to lighten up her family’s day with something as simple as a bowl of tinola.

“Cooking has always been a way to express love, create stronger bonds, and show compassion and care— and those are some of the things the world needs a lot of right now,” Olivarez explained.

When asked about the challenges of putting together the ad, he said “safety procedures like tests, disinfecting the set, up to casting a real family, was put in place. We had great production partners that helped us produce the film.”

The film wraps up with the family communing in the dinner table—with each member’s burdens lightening up with every spoonful they take.
