David Lubars, Chairman and Chief Creative Officer of BBDO North America, and the man whose ‘BMW Films’ idea redefined digital brand-building and helped create a new category at Cannes, will chair both the Film and Press juries at 2009’s Cannes Lions competition.
Lubars chaired the Titanium Jury in 2006 – a fitting task considering that BMW Films won the first-ever Titanium Lion. “David is a visionary whose boundless creativity is an inspiration to us all. He is a regular fixture on stage at Cannes, where he has collected Lions for outstanding work across multiple categories over many years," says Philip Thomas, CEO of Cannes Lions. "We are honoured that he will be chairing the Film and Press categories next year."
Commenting on his appointment, Lubars said "I’m humbled to be chosen for this prestigious position. ‘Film’, in all forms, has taken on a new role and meaning in the industry. While press, though the oldest medium, still shows itself to be one of the freshest. I look forward to working with my fellow jurors to recognise the best of both forms."
Lubars has personally won every major creative award in the world, plus four EMMYs. Outside the trade press, he and his work have been written about in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Business 2.0, Time, New York magazine and Fast Company; the BMW Films are part MoMA’s permanent collection in New York City. Before joining BBDO, he was Presi-dent of Fallon Worldwide and ECD of Fallon North America.
