SINGAPORE – Sweetshop’s Simon Cracknell has directed DBS’ comic Chinese New Year sequel.

The film stars the same hero we saw last year in the DBS Chinese New Year spot! He’s become a little wealthier than the last time we met him, and thanks to the DBS PayLah! app, can now bestow it upon others with a sense of regal air befitting a man of means.

The film takes the hero’s delusions of grandeur which rapidly spiral out of his control. We see his pleasurable expression as he bulk loads the gift cards, making generosity so easy. We hear the soft ‘Gong Xi’ and ‘Fa Cai’. He has a regal smile on his face as he continues scanning. We see that behind the friends, there’s a line of others, all waiting eagerly to take advantage of our hero’s newfound generosity. The film escalates in pace and jump cuts through our hero handing out gift cards, becoming less and less cool and instead more and more flustered frantic and fumbled.

Simon said, “What is lovely about this script is we are able to depict this very quickly via punchy quick cuts, escalating the actions and compounding the consequences of our hero’s touching, but misplaced thinking. We stay within the same tonal space as our previous spot, but bring an added layer of drama to it via our wonderful characterization, enlarging the story world, making it even funnier to observe.”
