December is more than just Christmas season in the Philippines. It is also Metro Manila Film Fest (MMFF) season. When Philippine film takes over major cinemas nationwide.

Unfortunately, this is also when Philippine films also start prolifrating in illegal torrent and streaming websites.

Globe, a purveyor of the best of local content, wished to tackle this issue. They launched the #PlayItRight campaign which endeavors to convince Filipinos to watch the content they love the right way.

Last December 23, while stars took to the streets to join the MMFF Parade of Stars, Globe did something surprising. They took to torrent and streaming sites and uploaded copies of MMFF films.

Within hours, people started to click on the copies in hopes of watching the films for free. However, what greeted them was an entirely different kind of film – one that starred the film crew who worked hundreds of hours to create the films pirates were hoping to download illegally.

The campaign is ongoing and has fueled discussion online. In fact, some of the fake streaming sites have been reported.  While the directors and producers of the films have begun to promote these fake torrents and sites.

Hopefully, in this battle of torrents against torrents, Philippine cinema wins.
