Jung von Matt DONAU cuts Burger King Austria menu to 1 item to promote voter participation

VIENNA, AUSTRIA — 2024 has been a year of important elections all over the world, with even more to come. In addition to the forthcoming US vote, Austria is holding elections this month, with the Far Right Freedom party currently leading in the polls. 

To highlight the importance of democratic voting, Burger King in Austria and creative agency Jung von Matt DONAU surprised customers by cutting its menu to just one single item for a day. 

Hungry Burger King customers in selected restaurants were perplexed to discover that only the Whopper was available instead of the usual full menu — from Big King to Long Chicken, Chili Cheese Nuggets, and more.

Hidden cameras captured the wide range of reactions from customers at a restaurant and drive-thru. After some heated discussions, Burger King revealed the true purpose behind the action: to remind Austrians of the importance of democratic choice. 

The campaign is designed to highlight the importance of voting rights in the upcoming national elections, which will be held on September 29. Ahead of that date, the campaign video will be shared on social media, pushing the message of democracy and voter participation with the hashtag #YourVoteMatters.

“Burger King is at the heart of society. Our doors are open to everyone who wants to choose from a wide selection. On the occasion of the elections, we feel it is important to contribute and encourage eligible Austrians to use their vote on September 29,” said Jan-Christoph Küster, Managing Director of Burger King Austria.
