SAO PAOLO – In celebration of International Women’s Day, BETC Sao Paolo created an app that will count all the times women are being interrupted by men every time they speak.
Making an app for this might seem ridiculous to some but the number of times women are being interrupted in both national and international TV are appalling. During the first US presidential debates, then Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, was interrupted 51 times by now the US President Donald Trump. Award-winning artist, Adele, was interrupted by actor, James Corden, while she was making her speech during the Brit Awards. World renowned artist, Taylor Swift, was also interrupted by singer, Kanye West, when she accepted her Best Female Video award during the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Female news anchors across every newscast are continually interrupted by male co-anchors and guests.
Boardrooms are no exception. Women across the world are often interrupted by male co-workers or superiors especially during meetings. And the biggest problem out of all this is that these men are usually not fully aware that they are doing this.
So, to help demonstrate how common this phenomenon is in workplaces, this app can be used to analyze everyday conversations. The app will be crunching data from the recordings to show a tally of just how much women are being interrupted by men.
In the website, http://www.womaninterruptedapp.com/, users can see statistics from around the world, showing which countries where women are being more interrupted and at what times.
Female artists designed various posters to call out this phenomenon.
By visualizing this phenomenon, maybe our male colleagues will become more conscious about how and when they speak.
