MANILA, PHILIPPINES – adidas Originals celebrates the convergence of music and style with none other than the iconic group RUN DMC. In the early 1980s, the raucous rap group burst onto the scene and revolutionised the way we all view fashion, wearing thick gold chains, adidas tracksuits, and unlaced Superstars with the tongue popping out. Declaring their allegiance to the brand, RUN DMC’s 1986 instant classic “My adidas” solidified the legend of the Superstar shoe in hip-hop lore forever. Beyond style, it’s no exaggeration to say that from the beginning, RUN DMC has always stood for breaking through the glass ceiling. The group’s success has undoubtedly shone bright in modern history as a beacon for creative expression throughout the world. Today, adidas Originals honors the group’s undeniable impact on pop culture with a collaborative apparel and footwear collection.
Paying homage to the late Jam Master Jay, the collection has been designed with the iconic DJ’s trailblazing sense of style at its heart. The apparel offering begins with a Sneakersnstuff exclusive — a reissue of the iconic ‘Kings from Queens’ RUN DMC and adidas crewneck featuring embroidery, graphics, and prints throughout, as well as co-branded labels. Next up is a satin varsity jacket inspired by adidas’ archival ‘Best of Times’ leather jacket and featuring a dual branded adidas and RUN DMC lining. Moving on, the collection features two black heavyweight fleece hoodies: one with a ‘Hollis Crew’ graphic, and one with embroidered ribbons and medallions celebrating the achievements of RUN DMC matched with a gold foil print on the back. Finally, rounding out the apparel offering, are three tees: one white cotton tee with a ‘Hollis Crew’ graphic, one black cotton tee with a photo print of the group shot by Eli Reed in 1986 on the front and the lyrics to my adidas on the back, and one black cotton tee with a gold foil chest print and Jam Master Jay forever co-branded labels.
Keeping things classic, the collection then features two special makeups of the Superstar 50 silhouette; one white with black stripes and one black with white stripes. Both feature leather uppers, a red heel tab, and customary shell-toes. The black pair once again pays homage to Jam Master Jay, with the DJ’s portrait featuring prominently on the tongue. Meanwhile, serving as an ode to Run DMC’s indomitable style, the group’s logos are boldly placed throughout both sneakers, with prominent features on the tongue and sockliner. Allowing the wearer to let the sneaker’s tongue stick out in honor of the iconic rap group’s unmatched flair, both colorways of the Superstar 50 Run DMC come unlaced, with extra pairs of ‘fat’ laces for good measure. Capping this all off, the commemorative sneakers then come packaged in a custom box.
Bringing the whole story to life, the collaborative collection is accompanied by a poignant lookbook which takes Rev Run, Darryl McDaniels, and some of their family members, back to Queens at 192 Park where the story of Run DMC first began. The lookbook features touching images of the iconic Jam Master Jay mural in Hollis, the parks the group used to hang out in, and other highly significant spots.
The adidas Originals and RUN DMC collaborative collection first launches with an NYC and Sneakersnstuff exclusive release of the ‘Kings from Queens’ crewneck and black Superstar 50 on October 30th. Following this, the rest of the collection launches on November 14th on the adidas app and adidas.com.ph, as well as adidas Originals stores in Greenbelt 5 and Bonifacio High Street.
As part of the collection’s launch, adidas Philippines partner Creator Quiccs also created an adidas-exclusive NanoTEQ Toy inspired by none other than the renowned hip hop group itself.
