MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Strategist, marketing and communications expert, and Managing Director of Hyper Island EPC Peachy Pacquing believes that humans and AI can collaborate and produce better work – and ultimately create a better world. The key is for designers to become adaptable and master meta-learning, or “learning how to learn”, to be able to adapt to the twists and bends that come along with the advances in our technology.

“We will have to embrace humility and know that we don’t know everything, but we will figure it out together,” she said in her talk, “Calling on Chiron”, delivered at the 7th International Design Conference last September 14 and 15, at Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez, CCP Complex, Pasay City.

Technology integration speeds up and keeps increasing in scope and scale, so upskilling and reskilling people in hard skills won’t be enough, she explained. Technology will take over most of the hard skills that matter today, but 80% of jobs in the near future have yet to be invented. Designers shouldn’t be trained in skills they can’t necessarily use in the future; what is important, rather, is to become “trans-disciplinary specialist generalists.”

“Leave the computations to the computers. Human beings are here to create meaning,” she said.
