MANILA, PHILIPPINES — At the turn of every year, creatives eagerly anticipate different trends and predictions. However, one design forecast dominates headlines at the end of each year and catches attention everywhere, even beyond the creative industry: Pantone’s Color of the Year. For 2023, the color experts have spoken — it’s all about Viva Magenta.

Descending from the red family, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta is rooted in nature while still being an explosive standout that represents vibrance and vivacity. With its exuberance and boldness, it embodies a sense of fearlessness, optimism, celebration, and preparation for uncertainty. All these things are quite fitting as 2023 follows unprecedented times and gives people the sense of a new beginning.

The much-awaited Color of the Year was announced last December by Pantone Color Institute VP Laurie Pressman during a live stream from Art Basel Miami.

“For 2023, we look to a color that highlights our change of perspective, spotlighting our need to feel empowered and infusing a strength and positivity so that we can courageously and fearlessly embrace a new pathway with confidence,” said Pressman.

Viva Magenta’s rootedness in nature plays a big part in Pantone’s decision. It is inspired by the red of the cochineal, which is not only the most precious but also one of the strongest and brightest of the natural dye family.

“In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real,” explained Pantone Color Institute Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman. “Rooted in the primordial, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.”

Pantone has already kickstarted Viva Magenta’s reign with collaborations with Motorola, Cariuma, and Hydrow, but it’ll be exciting to see all the other ways that various industries incorporate the organic liveliness and unabashed boldness of 2023’s Color of the Year into product design, beauty and fashion, interior design, graphics, and more.
