DIGITAL – After a long and hard battle by the LGBT community and its supporters, the Supreme Court has finally legalized gay marriage in the US on Friday.
In his decision, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote:
“No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family,” he wrote. “In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage,” Justice Kennedy said of the couples challenging state bans on same-sex marriage. “Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.”
And just within a few minutes after the historic decision was made, the internet celebrated by splashing rainbow colors in their tweets, Facebook posts and even on their profile pictures.
Some brands added more fun and color to this celebration by coming up with these congratulatory responses.
Youtube was one of the first to release this #ProudToLove video celebrating marriage equality and LGBT pride:
Twitter launched a heart-shaped, rainbow-colored emoji that appears every time someone tweets #LoveWins, the hashtag that was first used by US President Barack Obama in his celebratory tweet.
Every time you search gay marriage, same-sex marriage or marriage equality, you will see a rainbow-themed Google results page.
Facebook rolled out an application Celebrate Pride which can ‘rainbow-fy’ your profile picture in just one click.
Indeed, there is always a rainbow after a storm. Happy pride!
