GLOBAL – Facebook has announced that Safety Check is launching on Facebook Lite in more than 100 countries, to provide an easier way for people in areas with low connectivity to let friends and family know they are safe following a crisis. In many areas around the world, networks can be slow and unreliable. This can be even more challenging after a crisis, when communication is critical.
Facebook Lite is designed for people to access Facebook in areas with low connectivity or limited internet, and is being used by people in 55 languages. The software uses less data, installs fast, loads quickly and works on lower-end devices and slower networks.
To date, Safety Check has been activated more than 1,000 times in countries around the world and has already notified people that their families and friends are safe more than 3 billion times.
“Our goal is to build tools that help keep people safe and make it easier to get the help you need to recover from a crisis. By making Safety Check available on Facebook Lite, even more people will be able to easily connect with friends and family to let them know that they’re safe following a crisis and check on others.” Asha Sharma, Product Lead for Social Good at Facebook.
