LOS ANGELES, USA — The 81st Golden Globe Awards, organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, officially opens the year’s entertainment awards season with an evening of recognizing the past year’s best performances in film, TV, and more. 2023 saw a lot of iconic pop culture moments fueled by entertainment – from Barbie to Oppenheimer, from Beef to The Last of Us, and everything in between – and the annual Golden Globes kicks off the celebrations with the first batch of big winners for the new year.

Hosted by Jo Koy, who also happens to be making history as the awards’ first-ever Filipino-American host, the 81st Golden Globes was a big night for Asian creatives and storytellers, with some of the evening’s biggest wins awarded to their brilliant works and performances.

Beef, a limited series from Netflix that follows two strangers from very different lifestyles after a road rage incident, brought home three distinctions, namely Best Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for TV, and history-making Best Actress (Limited Series) for Ali Wong and Best Actor (Limited Series) Steven Yeun – who are both the first Asian Americans to win these awards in their respective categories.

Highly-anticipated The Boy and the Heron, Hayao Miyazaki’s first feature film in 10 years, took home Best Motion Picture (Animated). It follows a fantastical story of a young boy desperately searching for his deceased mother in another world in a new town. Despite its international release pushed back to December 2023 – five months since initial screening in Japan – the film still caught the HFPA’s attention, and the interest of viewers all over the world.
