1. Vermin is hungry… (Story: Spider-Man: Kraven’s Last Hunt. Writer: J.M. DeMatteis. Artist: Mike Zeck.)
Kraven’s Last Hunt is the most startling Spider-Man story. In one scene, a young woman walks through the rainy city street at night only to encounter Vermin, the cannibalistic rat-man. End scene. When we next see Vermin, he’s in the sewers, chewing on some ribs with the meat dripping off…

2. Arnim Zola’s experiments. (S: Captain America: Castaway in Dimension Z. W: Rick Remender. A: John Romita Jr.)
In a flashback to mad geneticist Arnim Zola’s old life, his cleaning lady’s husband tells Arnim that she’s been missing along with their pet Doberman for days. He returns to his lab where it’s revealed that Arnim has transplanted the landlady’s head onto to the Doberman’s body. And the worst part is, she’s still alive.

3. The Age of the Marvel Zombies begins. (S: Marvel Zombies: Dead Days. W: Robert Kirkman. A: Sean Phillips.)
In a reality where the Avengers are zombies, hope remains as the Fantastic Four search for a cure. Mister Fantastic comes to a ghastly conclusion: the zombies are the next stage in evolution and that they should just accept it. He informs them that he’s already infected them. Despair strikes as the zombified team feed on a smiling Mister Fantastic.

4. Hulk Horrors (S: Immortal Hulk: Abomination. W: Al Ewing. A: Joe Bennet.)
The Hulk is hard to kill but when he encounters the new Abomination, it’s a sad and gruesome sight to see. The Abomination pukes out a powerful acid that blinds Hulk and makes him a paraplegic in a split second! The pain is so overwhelming that Hulk regresses to his childlike personality, blindly begging for the hurt to end.

5. Ruins (S: Ruins. W: Warren Ellis. A: Cliff & Terese Nielsen and Chris Moeller.)
It’s a world where everything we love about the Avengers goes wrong. The Avengers die in a mid-air explosion, bodies burning in the midday sun. Hulk is a walking mass of tumors. Hawkeye get his brains blown out. Ruins is filled with pages of horror after horror…
