Art & Culture: Bicolano Artist-Curator to participate in the Curatorial Development Workshop organized by Japan Foundation, PCAN, and UP Vargas Museum

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Selected curators will be participating in the online Curatorial Development Workshop to be held on October 21, 23 and 24, 2020 via a digital platform organized by the Japan Foundation, Manila (JFM), the Philippine Contemporary Art Network (PCAN), and the University of the Philippines Vargas Museum.

Geri Matthew Carretero, a Bicolano artist-curator and co-founder of Sorsogon’s Kurit-Lagting Artists Collective, is one of the participants selected by the international judging panel who will be presenting his curatorial proposal during the online workshop. As an artist-curator, he has exhibited his artworks and curated shows in various museums and galleries with themes about migration, displacement, and disability.

His community-based initiatives include working as consultant for communication, branding, advocacy and networking for NGOs that help children, youth, women, persons with disability (PWDs), and other vulnerable groups. He is presently finishing his Master of Fine Arts Degree at the University of the Philippines, Diliman.

The Curatorial Development Workshop, the sixth in the series since 2009, seeks to reflect on the relationship between the social context of the public health crisis brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic and the kind of curatorial mode responsive to the ecology of production.

Speakers for the forthcoming Curatorial Development Workshop are Patrick Flores (Director, PCAN and Curator, UP Vargas Museum), Tessa Guazon (PCAN), Renan Laru-an (PCAN), Roberto Paulino (PCAN), Taufik Darwis (Co-Founder, Bandung Performing Arts Forum, Bandung), Chuong-Dai Vo (Researcher, Asia Art Archives, Hong Kong), and Kamiya Yukie (Director, Japan Society, New York).
