PH hiring activity for ad industry shows biggest drop in Q3

MANILA – Online hiring for marketing and advertising talent in the Philippines for the third quarter has significantly dropped from a year earlier, based on new figures from online recruitment firm Monster.com.

A summary of the latest Monster Employment Index (MEI) revealed that the Philippines consistently recorded the biggest drop in the July-September period compared to last year.

Online hiring for the Advertising, Market Research, Public Relations, Media and Entertainment sector in thecountry fell 24% year-on-year. The downtrend is across the region. In comparison, Singapore and Malaysia had a 6% and 9% drop in the same period compared to last year.

The drop for July was notably high in the Philippines with 42% which continued in August with 22%. Despite better figures from Singapore and Malaysia in the same period, hiring activity for this industry still witnessed negative year-on-year growth

With an 18% drop year-on-year, The Philippines again posted the biggest decline in hiring activity for marketing & communications job roles this September. Marketing jobs are also on the downtrend in Singapore at 9%.
Malaysia is the only market where marketing and communications roles have experienced positive growth year-over-year for September 2015, albeit at just 1%.

“It hasn’t been an easy quarter for the Advertising sector and for Marketing & Communications roles, as both industry and occupational MEI data has consistently shown negative growth, which is in line with overall online hiring activity in each market,” said Sanjay Modi, Managing Director, Monster.com (India, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong).

Why the negative year-on-year growth across the board? Modi says the demand is there, but he thinks there’s just not enough qualified out there to do the job.

“Malaysia is the only market with any positive year-over-year growth for marketing job roles, although this is relatively minimal. While there is still a high demand in all markets for niche mobile, technical, digital and creative industry talent across the region, there is a strong possibility that hiring activity has decreased due to a lack of available talent
