NEW YORK CITY, USA – ‘Design as a Global Conversation’ – this theme was prophetically selected by The International Federation of Interior Architects / Designers (IFI) members well in advance of the global pandemic that has upended the world as we know it. Celebrated throughout the entire month of May, the designated date of IFI World Interiors Day (IFI WID) 2021 is Saturday, 29 May.
IFI WID, a longstanding IFI event, is akin to Valentine’s Day. It is an annual opportunity for all designers and enthusiasts to globally unite through themed provocative celebrations (large and small). Recognizing the value of Interiors and all who make built environments, IFI WID causes public awareness. Design professionals, students and manufacturers, together with institutions, agencies and members of the public, are invited to organize activities to explore the IFI WID theme for that year. Participation in these events brings IFI WID to life around the globe, showcasing Interiors’ social, cultural, economic and physical impact and contribution to society.
IFI WID 2021: Design as a Global Conversation
At a time when in-person interactions and contacts are limited, interpersonal and community engagement require fresh, dynamic and interactive exchanges. This year, IFI WID celebrates the role of design as a meaningful connector, bringing the world together to discuss and explore the possibilities and opportunities presented today, while providing the support and understanding everyone needs. As we all learn to adapt and change with the times, so too will design evolve. How can Interior Architecture/ Design ensure a valuable contribution to a new era? How can professionals and all stakeholders of the discipline interpret design in ways that are relevant now and into the future? How can Interiors drive the positive change today’s world requires?
Through independently organized local events, these and many more aspects will need to be explored as part of this worldwide dialogue.
How to Participate
IFI WID activities and celebrations are independently organized and vary in type, size, and location. Activities usually range from individual showcases to small group discussions to large city-wide events. We encourage everyone who is passionate about Interiors and design to join with family, friends, colleagues or community members to take the opportunity to mark this occasion. Celebrate the value that interior spaces and those who create them bring to our lives, examine the instrumental role that these spaces play in human development and collectively voice the power of design as a constructive process and tool for understanding.
Design’s Power & Impact
Inherently designers come together to actively imagine and construct solutions for the planet’s issues and challenges, but these past months have required us to step back and reflect on the world and our creative role in it. Experience has shown that through thoughtful imagination and articulation (of words, images, objects and environments), designers can convey innovative, timely and appropriate messages and solutions for supporting humanity’s wellbeing and success. As we embrace a new year and new beginnings for 2021, IFI calls on everyone to join the world design community to engage in a refreshed dialogue – a discussion that explores design, its contributions and impacts. We invite you to join in IFI’s WID 2021 discourse, exploring ‘Design as a Global Conversation’ for today, leading to tomorrow’s reality.
