MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Insidious mania swept the Philippine box office as Insidious: The Red Door opened at No. 1, knocking out the record for the year’s biggest opening weekend, with a monumental PHP 205.6 million in five days (July 05 to 09), on 542 screens in 206 locations. This result is also the biggest opening weekend for horror films of all-time in the Philippines. This was announced by Columbia Pictures, the film’s local distributor.

Like an unexpected twist of a horror film, the blockbuster performance of The Red Door delighted local Philippine audiences. “The film was poised to open well, but we were just blown away by how much the horror fans embraced this, the franchise’s final chapter,” said Managing Director of Columbia Pictures Christopher Sy. “It’s like the biggest, most enthusiastic send-off party to a beloved friend,” he added.

And party the horror fans did, to the extent of taking over cinemas as they showed up in droves to event midnight screenings that theaters immediately scheduled to keep up with audiences’ demands.  The excitement was palpable as fans waited in lines, with an energy that hasn’t been felt in cinemas in a long time.  “I think the fans wanted to experience the movie with other people, to get scared together, to scream together, in a shared environment,” added Christopher.  “And this can only be possible inside a cinema – in the dark, with a giant screen, and the best sound,” he furthered.

The achievement of Insidious: The Red Door becomes even more significant when one considers that the horror title has become the biggest-grossing opening weekend of the past 12 months, besting the opening weekend figures of big-budget tentpoles as Avatar: The Way of the Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, The Little Mermaid, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,  John Wick: Chapter 4, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Fast X, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Insidious: The Red Door, the latest and final installment in the fan-favorite franchise, has also broken the record for the biggest horror opening weekend of all time, beating the opening weekend performances of the previously released Insidious films, as well as films from The Conjuring and IT franchises, Annabelle: Creation and local titles Deleter and Feng Shui

Other notable milestones the film achieved are: the biggest Philippine opening weekend for the past 12 months, the third biggest Philippine opening weekend since the post-post-pandemic reopening of cinemas in October 2021, the fifth biggest Sony Pictures opening weekend all-time and widest release ever for a horror title.

SM North EDSA Cinema nabbed the highest box-office receipts for Insidious: The Red Door with PHP 8.5 million, followed by SM Megamall Cinema (PHP 7.2 million) and SM Fairview Cinema (PHP 4.96 million).

The Top 10 cinemas also include SM Mall of Asia (PHP 4.45 million), SM Clark (PHP 4.3 million), SM Dasmarinas (PHP 4.2 million), SM Seaside Cebu (PHP 3 million), SM Iloilo (PHP 2.93 million), SM Davao (PHP 2.9 million) and SM Marikina (PHP 2.8 million).

Rounding up the Top 20 theaters are SM Grand Central (PHP 2.79 million), Uptown Taguig (PHP 2.7 million), SM Baguio (PHP 2.56 million), SM Pampanga (PHP 2.397 million), SM Lipa (PHP 2.389 million), SM Bacoor (PHP 2.38 million), SM Southmall (PHP 2.36 million), SM San Lazaro (PHP 2.3 million), SM Cebu (PHP 2.27 million) and Robinsons Antipolo (PHP 2.267 million).

Insidious: The Red Door brings the original cast (Patrick Wilson, Ty Simpkins, and Rose Byrne) back together for the epic conclusion to the terrifying saga of the Lambert family. Directed by Wilson and produced by Jason Blum, Oren Peli, James Wan, and Leigh Whannell, the much-anticipated horror film is now showing in cinemas.

Now showing in Philippine cinemas, Insidious: The Red Door is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.  Connect with the hashtag #InsidiousMovie
