ASIA – In a Facebook post, Wei Zhu, Grab Taxi Chief Technology Officer (CTO) announced his resignation from the first and largest taxi-booking app in Southeast Asia. He has only been with the company for a year.

Citing his reason for leaving, Zhu said it’s time for him to move on to explore new adventures in life.

Joining Grab Taxi wasn’t really part of Zhu’s original career plan, “I was one week away from leaving Singapore and going back to America to work on my own startup. Even though I never entertained the idea of joining another company at the time, GrabTaxi caught my attention because I was fascinated by the vision of transforming transportation for 500 million people in South East Asia.”

With a bit change in plans and a cancelled vacation to Japan then, the next 12 months became an amazing year of adventure with the company that was just starting to penetrate the Asian market.

“In early days our system used to melt down under load multiple times a day, now we are handing XX times more loads,” recalled Zhu.

In less than a year, Grab Taxi’s reach and technology dramatically grew. “We grew our tech team from 20 to almost one hundred, and built new $100M R&D centers in Singapore, Beijing and HCMC. We are often called the the biggest tech startup in South East Asia’s history.”

As for his next steps, Zhu said, “The first thing [I would do] is to bring my family for vacation before school starts, then I would like to take some me time to do diving around SEA, traveling in China and some adventure in Alaska. After that I will think about what/where to do next.”
