MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – ACMI’s Melbourne Winter Masterpiece DreamWorks Animation: The Exhibition has taken out first and second spots in The Art Newspaper’s coveted Top 20 Exhibitions list. The most popular exhibition in the world for 2019, DreamWorks Animation’s run at Brazil’s Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil saw a stunning 11,380 visitors go through the exhibition each day at the museum’s Rio location, while an additional 9,277 people a day saw it at the museum’s Belo Horizonte venue. In total, over 1.2 million people visited DreamWorks Animation during its run at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil.
At is 2014 debut in Melbourne, the exhibition welcomed 195,282 visitors to ACMI.
Developed by ACMI in collaboration with the DreamWorks Animation creative team, the 400-piece show features storyboards, concept drawings, paintings and maquettes for film favourites such as Shrek, Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda.
Part of ACMI’s touring program, DreamWorks Animation is just one of ACMI’s blockbuster exhibitions touring the globe. Since its inception in 2010, ACMI’s touring program has generated almost 4 million visits in 40 cities across four continents.
A Melbourne Winter Masterpiece, ACMI’s award-winning Wonderland had its world premiere in Melbourne in 2018 where 172,542 visitors tumbled down the rabbit hole to celebrate the screen legacy of Lewis Carroll’s timeless Alice in Wonderland.
Since its debut, Wonderland has travelled to the Art Science Museum Singapore where visits surpassed ACMI’s Fed Square audience, and recently wrapped up at New Zealand’s Te Papa Tongarewa.
ACMI’s 2012 homegrown exhibition Game Masters recently returned to Australia following its North American tour. The museum’s first international export, Game Masters has entertained 1.2 million people and counting across Scotland, Sweden, Germany, the US, New Zealand as well as Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.
ACMI’s regional Australia program includes ACMI’s Cleverman, an exhibition that goes behind the scenes of the ground-breaking ABC Australian Indigenous superhero series by the same name; as well as Del Kathryn Barton: The Nightingale and the Rose, a collaboration between two-time Archibald Prize winner Barton and acclaimed filmmaker Brendan Fletcher, and Code Breakers: Women in Games celebrating the achievements of women in the games industry.
ACMI has the largest homegrown international touring program of any museum in Australia. The revenue raised by ACMI’s touring program is invested back into the museum, fostering it’s continued growth and position as a cultural icon and asset for Australia.
