CANNES – Out of 45 shortlisted entries for Entertainment Lions for Music, a total of 19 entries were given metals. Both SMUGGLER New York/ROC NATION New York and TBWA\Media Arts Lab won the most coveted Grand Prix.
SMUGGLER New York/ROC NATION New York bagged one-half of the Entertainment Lions for Music Grand Prix with their work on Jay-Z’s ‘Smile’ for ROCNATION.
‘Smile’ is a track in which Jay-Z reflects on his young mother’s plight – growing up as a closeted lesbian. While the lyrics are powerful in and of themselves, seeing a creative interpretation come to life imbues the track with a bittersweet vibe, that might have been otherwise lost on a listener. When it comes to the visual’s technical aspect, the cinematography is on point, with beautiful camera work, composition, and lighting.
The second winner of the coveted Grand Prix was ‘Welcome Home’ of TBWA\Media Arts Lab for their client Apple. The ad imagines the story of a woman who meaningfully retreats from the working world. The musical fantasy of ‘Welcome Home’ is also a statement of a person’s social and political isolation. The momentary satisfaction of consumerism is not entirely hidden or bedazzled by her domicile’s sudden limitless expanse or the rainbow-hued striations that recall graphic artist Peter Saville’s luminous Christmas wrapping-paper design. Spike Jonze’s visual jests resemble drug-culture hallucinations that imply the deceptive fulfillment of materialism.
3 Gold Lions were given for this event, and 7 Silver Lions and 7 Bronze Lions were also awarded.
The Music Lions celebrate creative musical collaborations and original music content. Entries will need to demonstrate original production, promotion or distribution of music for brands; work where a recording artist or platform is innovatively leveraged to communicate with consumers.
