SINGAPORE — Ava Soh, 13-year-old fashion designer, launched a Kickstarter campaign for her “Cinta Diri” jewelry collection, a set of pieces aiming to inspire women to “love themselves” for her brand Daughters of the Revolution (DOTR).

The collection includes four pieces of jewelry made in solid 925 silver, plated in 18k yellow gold. As of writing, $10,704 worth of pledges to the campaign had already been made.

On the Kickstarter page, Soh said that she wanted to create pieces with the “concept of empowerment” integrated into the design. She references Singapore’s Peranakan culture, with “biscuits” that are called “love letters,” historically because young girls would hide their love letters in these snacks to give to boys.

Soh said with her jewelry collection, girls can keep their love letters to themselves, instead of giving them to someone else.

Soh is the daughter of Calvin Soh, a former senior advertising creative who runs Singapore’s celebrated One Kind House. Calvin Soh was a speaker at the adobo Festival of ideas.

Hi, I’m Ava Soh. I’m 13 yrs old and I just launched my Love Letter Collection on Kickstarter designed to remind women to love themselves first. I believe that only self-love breeds confidence and self-belief.

My inspiration behind this collection is the local Love Letter biscuit. If you click the link below, you can see why the story fits. My collection is completely original and has not been done before, and the story itself ties back to my mission. My passion for fashion began when I was five, styling miniature mannequin photoshoots and drawing fashion illustrations (photos attached) were one of my favorite pastimes.

I have a purpose-driven collection that is backed up by actions. Since its launch on Kickstarter three days ago, it has been successfully funded by 200 percent. Whilst I am over the moon with this achievement, I am not stopping here because part of the proceeds will go towards organizations that will help women. I’m currently talking to several groups whose cause I strongly resonate with.

I am determined to be the change I want to see and leave the world a better place than when I found it. My generation will be defined by our innovation and inventions. As the virus shows, that is what we need now.
